The 48 second sequence has been studied by thousands of film students of the years, but only now can you cut your own version using the original footage, all online. Storyboarded by Saul Bass and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the original scene was edited by George Tomasini together with Hitchcock. See what you can do and if it compares with the original!"

Ex-ambassador slams Straw over torture - [Sunday Herald] In March 2003 he was summoned to the Foreign Office, where, he says, he was told that “yes, [intelligence] may be obtained under torture, but provided we didn’t specifically ask for the individual to be tortured or do the torturing ourselves, that’s not illegal. And that Jack Straw had personally considered the matter and the security services decided this was useful material, so we should keep getting it and I should shut up.”

Forty years of living drum history where African rhythms and the harmonic explorations of John Coltrane come together. Steve Reid grew up living next door to John Coltrane, worked in a department store with Ornette Coleman, and his son is the drummer for 50 Cent and NWA...! Soul Jazz have just re-issued Steve's "Rhythmatism" album from the 1970's. The police say that was especially helpful to the work of units operating on mopeds, motorcycles and bikes. These "rapid response" tactics by the police were labeled internally as the "Kelly Doctrine," after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. On Wednesday, an Indymedia journalist posted the following report: "The Entire Scooter Goon Squad is wrapped around Fifth and 48th reading INDYMEDIA from an internet phone booth. Everyone should come by and bring your video cameras."

Iraqi journalists abused by US troops "According to Reuters, while their employees were detained, "[t]wo of the three said they had been forced to insert a finger into their anus and then lick it, and were forced to put shoes in their mouths." Reuters also reported that, "All three said they were forced to make demeaning gestures as soldiers laughed, taunted them and took photographs." The employees also claimed that U.S. soldiers said they would take them to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and that the soldiers "deprived them of sleep, placed bags over their heads, kicked and hit them and forced them to remain in stress positions for long periods." One of the Reuters journalists said he feared that he would be raped because soldiers told him they wanted to have sex with him. The employees said the abuse occurred at Forward Operating Base Volturno, near Fallujah."

Doctor Salam Ismael took aid to Fallujah last month. This is his story of how the US murdered a city "In Saqlawiya, one of the makeshift refugee camps that surround Fallujah, we found a 17 year old woman. “I am Hudda Fawzi Salam Issawi from the Jolan district of Fallujah,” she told me. “Five of us, including a 55 year old neighbour, were trapped together in our house in Fallujah when the siege began. “On 9 November American marines came to our house. My father and the neighbour went to the door to meet them. We were not fighters. We thought we had nothing to fear. I ran into the kitchen to put on my veil, since men were going to enter our house and it would be wrong for them to see me with my hair uncovered. “This saved my life. As my father and neighbour approached the door, the Americans opened fire on them. They died instantly."

Second sight "New Envisional figures about to be released show Britain leads the world in piracy. We are responsible for 38.4% of TV downloads in the EU and 18.5% worldwide. Australia is second with 15.6% and the US a poor third on 7.3%. The reason is simple. The pirated programmes are mainly made in English by US companies and released earlier there than here. Top of the piracy charts is 24 (95,000 downloads an episode) followed by Star Trek: Enterprise (90,000). "

Focus on situation in Fallujah "According to Col Peter Smith of the US Marines 1st Division, nearly 8,000 people are now living in the city, but he added that some 100,000 had passed through the checkpoints into the city, which used to have a total population of 280,000. Before and during the battles, two-thirds of the city's population was said to have fled, according to aid agencies. "

Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years by Professor Israel Shahak"The routine means for enforcing discrimination in everyday life is the ID card, which everyone is obliged to carry at all times. ID cards list the official 'nationality' of a person, which can be 'Jewish', 'Arab', 'Druze' and the like, with the significant exception of 'Israeli'. Attempts to force the Interior Minister to allow Israelis wishing to be officially described as 'Israeli', or even as 'Israeli-Jew' in their ID cards have failed. Those who have attempted to do so have a letter from the Ministry of the Interior stating that 'it was decided not to recognise an Israeli nationality'. The letter does not specify who made this decision or when."

Original Fawlty Towers goes for £1.5m The hotel that inspired the legendary TV series Fawlty Towers has been sold for around £1.5m. John Cleese based the character of Basil Fawlty on Donald Sinclair, a former owner of the Hotel Gleneagles, in Torquay, Devon. The new owners are a family from Bristol who say they are "big fans" of the comedy, which ran for 12 episodes between 1975 and 1979. Cleese, who stayed at the hotel with the Monty Python team in 1971, described Sinclair as "the most wonderfully rude man I have ever met".

Israeli occupation soldiers have shot and killed a Palestinian boy in downtown al-Khalil (Hebron), alleging that he tried to attack soldiers with a sharp object. However, Palestinian witnesses dispute the claim, testifying that soldiers stationed outside al-Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron's Old Quarter murdered 13-year-old Muhammad Ayyad Daana in cold blood. "The soldiers were shouting at the boy, and then shot him in the leg, however as he fell down and was shivering with pain, another soldier shot him in the chest, finishing him off.

t r u t h o u t - Falluja Residents Testify to the Destruction of Their City Falluja has since become a ghost town. A very small fraction of the population has returned, certainly less than 20%, most of them poor people who had no means to live in Baghdad or who found no other place to live elsewhere. They survive in an apocalyptic decor, in the midst of ruins and roads blocked or clogged up with burned out cars and piles of rubble. The stores are empty, looted. The hospitals have been damaged and closed. Electricity and water service are just beginning to barely return. Cars are only exceptionally permitted to enter the city. The residents live like nomads.

Sami Ramadani: The Vietnam turnout was good as well On September 4 1967 the New York Times published an upbeat story on presidential elections held by the South Vietnamese puppet regime at the height of the Vietnam war. Under the heading "US encouraged by Vietnam vote: Officials cite 83% turnout despite Vietcong terror", the paper reported that the Americans had been "surprised and heartened" by the size of the turnout "despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting". A successful election, it went on, "has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam". The echoes of this weekend's propaganda about Iraq's elections are so close as to be uncanny.

Republicans, conservatives dominated Iraq election coverage on FOX After the polls closed in Iraq on January 30, coverage of the Iraqi elections on CNN, MSNBC, and FOX News all featured military, intelligence, and foreign affairs analysts as well as correspondents in Iraq and Washington and at polling sites in the United States. But FOX News allotted disproportionate time for Republican politicians and conservative pundits to declare that the elections were a "vindication" for President Bush's Iraq policy. While CNN featured six current Republican officials and conservative pundits and five Democrats and progressives and MSNBC featured seven Republicans and conservatives and six Democrats and progressives, FOX News featured 17 Republicans and conservatives and seven Democrats and progressives.

When Robots Do the Killing Late last week, in a parking lot in New Jersey, the U.S. Army unveiled what may be the future of war: 3-foot-tall robotic "soldiers," outfitted with tank tracks, night vision and mounted automatic weapons capable of firing more than 300 rounds at a burst. Known as SWORDS (Special Weapons Observation Reconnaissance Detection Systems), these battle bots are on the leading edge of a new kind of warfare, in which — or so the argument goes — our troops will one day remain hidden (and, presumably, protected) while engaging the enemy by remote control. The Army intends to deploy 18 SWORDS units to Iraq in the spring, marking the first time robots have been used to fight and kill human beings one on one.
