System for Multiple Compositions on a Theme : this is rather good... System for Multiple Compositions on a Theme is a series of videos shot and edited on analog equipment in 1995 for the sole purpose of experimenting with editing video to create audio compositions. Rather than the norm of composing a video, the image, into a sequence, here the audio was composed and the accompanying image became incidental, secondary.

Songs From The Midnight Matinee : John Schnall was remixing movies for the radio on his WFMU program The Midnight Matinee. The show combined dialogue from movies with music in various ways, and turning such cinematic classics as Jerry Lewis' feel-good Nazi flick The Day The Clown Cried into hour-long radio programs. In the process of remixing, songs were sometimes created out of the dialogue and musical snippets. Many of the the full shows are archived in realaudio on this page.

Testing Drugs on India's Poor : Nevertheless, even before the anti-generic rules were enacted, companies performing clinical trials in India saw their share of problems. In 2004, two India-based pharmaceutical companies, Shantha Biotech in Hyderabad and Biocon in Bangalore, came under scrutiny for conducting illegal clinical trials that led to eight deaths. Shantha Biotech failed to obtain proper consent from patients while testing a drug meant to treat heart attacks. Biocon tested a genetically modified form of insulin without the proper approval from the Drug Controller General of India or the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee. In another incident, Sun Pharmaceuticals convinced doctors to prescribe Letrozole, a breast cancer drug, to more than 400 women as a fertility treatment in a covert clinical trial -- and used the results to promote the drug for the unapproved use.

Barbarism begins with Barbie, the doll children love to hate : BARBIE, that plastic icon of girlhood fantasy play, is routinely tortured by children, research has found. The methods of mutilation are varied and creative, ranging from scalping to decapitation, burning, breaking and even microwaving, according to academics from the University of Bath. The findings were revealed as part of an in-depth look by psychologists and management academics into the role of brands among 7 to 11-year-old schoolchildren.

Department of Homeland Security agents visit student over "Little Red Book" loan : A senior at UMass Dartmouth was visited by federal agents two months ago, after he requested a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's tome on Communism called "The Little Red Book." Two history professors at UMass Dartmouth, Brian Glyn Williams and Robert Pontbriand, said the student told them he requested the book through the UMass Dartmouth library's interlibrary loan program. The student, who was completing a research paper on Communism for Professor Pontbriand's class on fascism and totalitarianism, filled out a form for the request, leaving his name, address, phone number and Social Security number. He was later visited at his parents' home in New Bedford by two agents of the Department of Homeland Security, the professors said.

Your Own Private Plexure : About 13 years ago John Oswald gave us his masterwork of audio collage, Plexure, which wove together minute fragments of the greatest hits of the previous 10 years into a brilliant sound tapestry. Now you almost get to do the same thing in a few moment with your own music collection, at least whatever portion of it you keep in iTunes, thanx to Jason Freeman's iTunes Signature Maker. The Java program asks you a few configuration questions like how many songs you want to include and how big the fragments should be, and then crunches away for a few minutes to give you a little clip that is a brief collage of the songs you've been listening to. Here's an example One really nice feature of the program is that after it builds the signature, you can look at the "structure" of it.

Is the Pentagon spying on Americans? : Secret database obtained by NBC News tracks ‘suspicious’ domestic groups - WASHINGTON - A year ago, at a Quaker Meeting House in Lake Worth, Fla., a small group of activists met to plan a protest of military recruiting at local high schools. What they didn't know was that their meeting had come to the attention of the U.S. military.A secret 400-page Defense Department document obtained by NBC News lists the Lake Worth meeting as a “threat” and one of more than 1,500 “suspicious incidents” across the country over a recent 10-month period.

The Man Who Sold the War : Meet John Rendon, Bush's general in the propaganda war

Pentagon's use of media firm, company's performance, scrutinized : When The Rendon Group was hired to help Afghan President Hamid Karzai with media relations in early 2004, few thought it was a bad idea. Though Rendon's $1.4 million bill seemed high for Afghanistan, the U.S. government was paying. Within seven months, however, Karzai was ready to get rid of Rendon. So was Zalmay Khalilzad, then the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan and now the American envoy in Iraq, according to interviews, e-mails and memos obtained by the Chicago Tribune. The complaint: too much money for not enough work.

No peace with Sharon : by Gerald Kaufman is the Labour MP for Manchester Gorton. "Last there two years ago, I was appalled at how an already unacceptable situation has deteriorated. There are now more than 600 fixed checkpoints in the tiny Palestinian area, which, with so-called flying checkpoints, make free movement almost impossible. In Bethlehem, which used to be crammed with tourists, we saw just two groups in Manger Square and the Church of the Nativity. The Old City of Nablus, which I knew for a quarter of a century as a hub of commercial activity, is also desolate. Heavily-armed Israeli troops man walls, gates and huts, all preventing Palestinians from moving about."

The IDF rules in the hospitals, too By Amira Hass : It turns out the Israel Defense Forces are sovereign not only in the West Bank, but also in the hospitals. The views of a 19-year-old soldier and a Military Police (MP) officer overrule that of a medical doctor in the matter of the conditions under which a patient is held. A 14-year-old Palestinian wounded by IDF fire and taken to Schneider Children's Hospital had his hands and legs shackled, despite being guarded by two MPs and not being able to walk because of his wounds. The professional view of the hospital doctors was that the wounded youth, who two days earlier underwent surgery on his leg, should be freed from his shackles - but they were overruled.

ACLU Autopsy Reports : The head of Project Censored says that military autopsy reports released by the ACLU, "provide indisputable proof that detainees are being tortured to death while in US military custody. Yet the US corporate media are covering it with the seriousness of a garage sale for the local Baptist Church."

We help rich individuals and companies to spirit away vast sums from the developing world : Five trillion dollars has been corruptly removed from the world's poorest countries and lodged permanently in the world's richest countries. That is the "conservative estimate" not of a leftwing anti-globalisation activist but of a leading American businessman and enthusiast for capitalism who has just completed a major study of how multinational corporations, wealthy individuals and unscrupulous governments are using the world's banking systems in ways that spread poverty.

Tim Tom [QuickTime] : a five minute animated film that took 16 months to create. The simple scenario features two animated characters trying to meet against the wishes of a giant omnipotent human hand. There is no dialogue but the thoughts and expressions of the protagonists are written on their notepad faces. Using Maya, Photoshop, and After Effects, the 3D computer animation is made to look like realistic puppets made of clay and paper. It’s a reference to old stop-motion films. We also chose a 40’s jazz soundtrack (Django Reinhardt) and a black and white image to provide the film overall with the aesthetics of the classic films of Méliès, Trinka, Dudock de Wit, and Svankmayer.

Battle to Baghdad Boardgame : "Our game “Battle to Baghdad” is meant to be informative and a historical portrayal, showing both sides of a terrible event in our country’s history. We in no way intend to sensationalize this conflict, or belittle the sacrifices made by our soldiers. The only way to fully understand our intent is to try the game for yourself and make your own conclusions.

Arab nations deeply suspicious of US motives -poll : The Shibley Telhami six country survey of Arab public opinion is now officially out. (It surveyed Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE in October). First I'll note some of the headline findings about Arab attitudes towards the United States, Iraq, democracy, and al-Qaeda, and then (as is my way) concentrate on its findings about Arab media preferences (and thanks to Shibley for including this question). The headline findings: "The United States has been actively advocating the spread of democracy in the Middle East especially since the Iraq war." 6% believe that this is "an important objective that will make a difference"; 16% believe that this is "an important objective, going about it the wrong way"; 69% "do not believe that democracy is a real objective." "Did the war with Iraq bring more peace or less peace in the Middle East"? 6% more, 81% less. "Did the war in Iraq cause more or less terrorism?" 78% more, 10% less. "Did the war in Iraq create more or less democracy?" 9% more, 58% less. "Are the Iraqi people better or worse off after the war?" 4% better, 77% worse.

The AG's campaign against Arab MKs : According to the logic that has been guiding attorneys general (Elyakim Rubinstein and Menachem Mazuz) for several years now, Arab MKs are not allowed to do what journalists, arms dealers and exporters are allowed to do - namely, maintain contact with "an enemy country." At present, MK Azmi Bishara is being tried for visiting Syria and Lebanon, and making declarations considered to be incitement there, according to the prosecution. Moreover, Mazuz is considering filing an indictment for "entry to an enemy country" against MK Ahmed Tibi, and inviting MK Taleb al-Sana, who recently visited Damascus, to a police investigation.

British contractors In Iraq Fire On Civilians :(.wmv) The video first appeared on the site www.aegisIraq.co.uk which carries the disclaimer that it is not an official site of Aegis, but "belongs to the men on the ground who are the heart and soul of the company." Aegis, which was recently awarded a multimillion-dollar contract by the US government to provide security in Iraq, was started in 2002 by a former Scots Guard officer, Lt. Col. Tim Spicer. In one of the videoed attacks, a Mercedes is fired on at a distance of several hundred yards before it crashes in to a civilian taxi. In the last clip, a white civilian car is raked with machine gun fire as it approaches an unidentified security company vehicle. Bullets can be seen hitting the vehicle before it comes to a slow stop. There are no clues as to the shooter but either a Scottish or Irish accent can be heard in at least one of the clips above Elvis Presley's Mystery Train, the music which accompanies the video.

Use of Chemical in Iraq Ignites Debate : Omar Ibrahim Abdullah went for a walk to get away from the heavy fighting in Fallouja a little over a year ago and, by his account, came across such a grotesque sight that he's been unable to banish it from his memory. The United States had mounted a full-scale offensive to pacify the rebel-controlled Iraqi city, and Abdullah said he was eager to escape the Askari district, where he lived. He walked south toward the Euphrates River and stumbled on dozens of burned bodies that he said were colored black and red.

Secret British document accuses Israel : A confidential Foreign Office document accuses Israel of rushing to annex the Arab area of Jerusalem, using illegal Jewish settlement construction and the vast West Bank barrier, in a move to prevent it becoming a Palestinian capital. In an unusually frank insight into British assessments of Israeli intentions, the document says that Ariel Sharon's government is jeopardising the prospect of a peace agreement by trying to put the future of Arab East Jerusalem beyond negotiation and risks driving Palestinians living in the city into radical groups. The document, obtained by the Guardian, was presented to an EU council of ministers meeting chaired by the foreign secretary, Jack Straw, on Monday with recommendations to counter the Israeli policy, including recognition of Palestinian political activities in East Jerusalem.
